A New Book & CD
AUSTIN OSMAN SPARE

Austin Osman Spare new biography

Strange Attractor press have published a wonderful new biography on the artist Austin Osman Spare. Elegantly designed and full of fascinating stories detailing the artist’s life up until the 1950s, it contains many spellbinding artworks, reproduced with great care. Many of these come from Ossian Brown’s personal collection of Spare art, most notably the front cover painting, a sidereal water colour created in 1933 from his ‘Experiments in Reality’ series. In conjunction with the publication, Ossian has assisted Strange Attractor Press in creating a limited edition fine art print of this painting, which is available from the Strange Attractor website. For more information please follow the link below.
Other ZOS news includes the release of an excellent new album by John Zorn, ‘A Satyr's Play’, which comes illustrated with a collection of magnificent and rare Austin Osman Spare drawings. Ossian was very proud to assist in the creation of this wonderful release.

Ossian Brown
HAUNTED AIR

HAUNTED AIR

Ossian Brown's first book “Haunted Air” is published by Jonathan Cape in the UK on the 28th October. Focussing on Ossian's phantasmagorical collection of early Hallowe'en photography, America c. 1875 - 1955, his unique and extraordinary book comes with an introduction by David Lynch and an afterword by Geoff Cox. “Haunted Air” is available for pre-order from the Random House website.

“The roots of Hallowe’en lie in the ancient pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, a feast to mark the death of the old year and the birth of the new. It was believed that on this night the veil separating the worlds of the living and the dead grew thin and ruptured, allowing spirits to pass through and walk unseen but not unheard amongst men. The advent of Christianity saw the pagan festival subsumed in All Souls’ Day, when across Europe the dead were mourned and venerated. Children and the poor, often masked or in outlandish costume, wandered the night begging ‘soul cakes’ in exchange for prayers, and fires burned to keep malevolent phantoms at bay.

From Europe, the haunted tradition would quickly take root and flourish in the fertile soil of the New World. Feeding hungrily on fresh lore, consuming half-remembered tales of its own shadowy origins and rituals, Hallowee’en was reborn in America. The pumpkin supplanted the carved turnip; costumes grew ever stranger, and celebrants both rural and urban seized gleefully on the festival’s intoxicating, lawless spirit. For one wild night, the dead stared into the faces of the living and the living, ghoulishly masked and clad in tattered backwoods baroque, stared back.”

The photographs in Haunted Air provide an extraordinary glimpse into the traditions of this macabre festival from ages past, and form an important document of photographic history. These are the pictures of the dead: family portraits, mementoes of the treasured, now unrecognisable, other. Torn from album pages, sold piecemeal for pennies and scattered, abandoned to melancholy chance and the hands of strangers.”

CYCLOBE - September 2009

Welcome to the newly designed Cyclobe website. Currently accessible are the main news and merchandise pages. Over the following six weeks brand new content will be added, such as a film of Cyclobe's only live performance (Krems, Austria in April 2007).

Most importantly, we have been busy focussing on new material which - despite many false dawns - is about to see the light of day. The production deadline for the first new album-length Cyclobe project in five years is October 31st 2009. New Cyclobe recordings will then become available for sale and download.

A number of exciting book projects and film scores have also been undertaken. More about these to follow.

We'll subsequently be making available some scarce CDs from other projects which Stephen Thrower and Ossian Brown have worked on. These will appear for a limited period only.

We'd like to thank PrettyMannox for designing this website, Geoff Cox for his exquisite Cyclobe scrawl and Mark Pilkington for his beautiful bat photograph.

With our very best wishes

Release date: 16th September 2009

UnicaZürn are:

Stephen Thrower (Cyclobe; Coil)
David Knight (Arkkon; Shock Headed Peters; Danielle Dax; Lydia Lunch)

Both are also members of the improvisation group The Amal Gamal Ensemble.

Composed from recordings and improvisations made between 2004-2009 by the banks of the Thames and the East Sussex coast, Temporal Bends is a journey through time, and a dive into the depths. UnicaZürn sessions have always been accompanied by the spectre of water; slow currents or lapping waves, windows of streaming rain, seashore horizons. Temporal Bends is aquatic, coastal music, connecting an experience of the rivers and seas of England with the micro-waterways of memory and the mind, through decompression and dehydration to full flood and saturation. The oceans and estuaries of late evenings past and yet to come.

UnicaZürn's core musical instrumentation is processed electric guitar, clarinet and saxophone. Knight is renowned for his pulverising fretwork in Shock Headed Peters, and his cavernous guitar treatments in Arkkon; Thrower's reed playing provided a distinctive 'free-melancholy' in Coil and emerges as electro-acoustic texture in Cyclobe. To this duophonic arrangement, UnicaZürn add copious analogue synthesizer, mellotron and piano, with influences echoing back through Tangerine Dream's early albums to the VCS3 days of Roxy Music.

Special guest vocals on the song 'Jack Sorrow' by Danielle Dax, who also contributed the front cover painting.

With Temporal Bends, UnicaZürn offer a deeply immersive music which hovers at the brink of abstraction, seeking to conjure at that threshold fantastical coastlines and subterranean narratives in the mind's eye.
