CYCLOBE
'The Woods are Alive With the Smell of His Coming'
Premiere at 'The Dark Monarch' exhibition
Tate St Ives

Owl By David Noonan

Owl by David Noonan

A new composition by Cyclobe, 'The Woods are Alive with the Smell of His Coming' will be premiered at the Tate St. Ives, Cornwall, on the 21st of November as part of an exhibition entitled 'The Dark Monarch - Magic and Modernity in British Art'. The exhibition comprises work by a wide variety of artists; Paul Nash, Barbara Hepworth, Austin Osman Spare, Ithell Colquhoun, David Noonan, Richard Dadd, Derek Jarman, Samuel Palmer and Damien Hirst to name but a few. Cyclobe's audio presentation is a twenty minute pre-recorded piece, which is due to be released on their forthcoming album early in the new year. The event, a specially created symposium in conjunction with the exhibition, includes a variety of discussions and lectures from exhibition curators Martin Clark, Michael Bracewell and Alun Rowlands. Chris Stephens, Curator (Modern British Art) & Head of Displays at Tate Britain will also be present, as well as exhibiting artists Jeremy Millar, Mark Titchner and Clare Woods. There will be a screening of the excellent Incredible String Band's 'Be Glad For The Song Has No Ending' with director Peter Neal in attendance, and a short film by Angela Cockayne and Philip Hoare (author of 'England's Lost Eden'). From his own collection, Ossian Brown has contributed the 1955 painting 'The Qliphoth' by Austin Osman Spare, part of the 'Contexture of Being' series, for the exhibition's beautiful catalogue. Unfortunately, having only just confirmed our involvement we've not been able to share information about this sooner. We will be present at the event and look forward to seeing anyone who's able to attend. Tickets are limited so please check with the gallery for availability.

DOWN TERRACE
wins Raindance best film award

Stephen Thrower recently recorded several electronic music cues for the soundtrack of Down Terrace, a bleakly funny crime drama directed by Ben Wheatley. It's a pleasure to announce that the film has recently won two festival prizes. On the 4th of October it won the US-based Fantastic Fest's Next Wave Award for best feature and best screenplay, and on the 11th of October it took Best UK Feature at the Raindance Festival in London. Congratulations are due to director Ben, producer Andy Starke, and the brilliant ensemble cast, particularly Robin Hill who also co-wrote./p>

"Surreal and sinister, this is a splendid exercise in anti-social realism that deserves to reach a wider audience." - Empire online

CYCLOBE - September 2009

Welcome to the newly designed Cyclobe website. Currently accessible are the main news and merchandise pages. Over the following six weeks brand new content will be added, such as a film of Cyclobe's only live performance (Krems, Austria in April 2007).

Most importantly, we have been busy focussing on new material which - despite many false dawns - is about to see the light of day. The production deadline for the first new album-length Cyclobe project in five years is October 31st 2009. New Cyclobe recordings will then become available for sale and download.

A number of exciting book projects and film scores have also been undertaken. More about these to follow.

We'll subsequently be making available some scarce CDs from other projects which Stephen Thrower and Ossian Brown have worked on. These will appear for a limited period only.

We'd like to thank PrettyMannox for designing this website, Geoff Cox for his exquisite Cyclobe scrawl and Mark Pilkington for his beautiful bat photograph.

With our very best wishes

UnicaZürn are:

Stephen Thrower (Cyclobe; Coil)
David Knight (Arkkon; Shock Headed Peters; Danielle Dax; Lydia Lunch)

Both are also members of the improvisation group The Amal Gamal Ensemble.

Composed from recordings and improvisations made between 2004-2009 by the banks of the Thames and the East Sussex coast, Temporal Bends is a journey through time, and a dive into the depths. UnicaZürn sessions have always been accompanied by the spectre of water; slow currents or lapping waves, windows of streaming rain, seashore horizons. Temporal Bends is aquatic, coastal music, connecting an experience of the rivers and seas of England with the micro-waterways of memory and the mind, through decompression and dehydration to full flood and saturation. The oceans and estuaries of late evenings past and yet to come.

UnicaZürn's core musical instrumentation is processed electric guitar, clarinet and saxophone. Knight is renowned for his pulverising fretwork in Shock Headed Peters, and his cavernous guitar treatments in Arkkon; Thrower's reed playing provided a distinctive 'free-melancholy' in Coil and emerges as electro-acoustic texture in Cyclobe. To this duophonic arrangement, UnicaZürn add copious analogue synthesizer, mellotron and piano, with influences echoing back through Tangerine Dream's early albums to the VCS3 days of Roxy Music.

Special guest vocals on the song 'Jack Sorrow' by Danielle Dax, who also contributed the front cover painting.

With Temporal Bends, UnicaZürn offer a deeply immersive music which hovers at the brink of abstraction, seeking to conjure at that threshold fantastical coastlines and subterranean narratives in the mind's eye.
